Important information about the process of getting dental braces

The dental problems are common among both the adults and the kids. Though there are various types of dental treatments available for these patients, the most commonly seen remedy is the attachment of the dental braces, which are also called orthodontic cases. These cases are actually the special dental tools that are used for correcting the irregular dental alignment and bring the teeth into a straight line, so that all the teeth can be used in biting together. These orthodontic cases are placed over the original teeth, to exert certain pressure over the teeth and correct their functional disabilities.

  • Types of dental braces that are usually used – Earlier only metal cases were used for this orthodontic purpose; though the present metal braces are much smaller and less noticeable over the teeth. Now, the patients can also use white ceramic cases or colourless Invisalign aligners, to avoid the odd appearances of the previous cases. The lingual orthodontic cases are also made of metals, but these are placed on the inner side of the denture, to be kept out of sight. The metal cases are the cheapest ones, while the ceramic cases are the most expensive of all.
  • The procedure followed in installing the dental cases – The total procedure of installing orthodontic cases over the teeth usually takes 1 to 2 hours time. Firstly, the dentist clears and dry the teeth of the patient. Then typical glue is applied over the teeth and the bracket of the case is placed over this glue. Finally, the archwire of the brace is secured to this bracket with an elastic band, till it sets over the glue. The whole procedure is absolutely painless, though the pain of carrying the cases is felt after this total procedure is over. 
  • Foods that can be taken after putting on these cases – Usually, soft foods need to be eaten, after the orthodontic cases are applied over the teeth, to avoid the misplacement of the brackets. Moreover, the patients cannot chew any food for more than a week after the installation, due to the pain over the jaws. So they should be given fruit juices, soft fruits, like banana or berries; boiled or cooked vegetables, milk and other dairy products, nicely cooked lean meat, fish and tofu for many days. The patients should avoid the intake of any type of candy or other too sugary foods.
  • Age bracket for putting on orthodontic cases – Though the application of the orthodontic cases is seen mostly among the children and the teenage people; there is no age bar for this dental treatment. In fact, many adults are now seen to be visiting the dentists, who need to put on these cases to cure their dental problem.
  • Dental problems that can be cured by these cases – Mostly, these cases are required when the patient cannot bite any food with all the teeth together, due to the deformation among the teeth of the upper and lower jaws.
  • The need of a trained orthodontist – The installation of orthodontic cases should be done by a professional orthodontist only, to ensure correct treatment procedures. It is better to check whether this orthodontist is Board certified, to be sure of his/her skills in this matter.
  • Time was taken to get used to these cases – Usually, all the related pains subside within a month, after the installation of these cases. Gradually the patient get used to these artificial cases in his/her mouth, within a year and never seen to be complaining about it anymore.
  • The expense of getting the orthodontic cases – The orthodontists usually do not charge consultation fees from the patients. But the charges of installation of the orthodontic cases depend on the cost of these cases, which vary due to the materials used.
